Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the United States, died in 1850. Officially, he was said to have died from stomach flu, but there were persistent rumors of poisoning. Taylor, a member of the Whig party, opposed the expansion of slavery and was committed to preserving the Union. He made harsh statements about those who wanted to secede, making him a controversial figure.
Despite being a slave-owner himself, Taylor did not support the expansion of slavery into new territories. Because of this, Jefferson Davis, who later became the President of the Confederacy, was suspected of involvement in Taylor's death.
Conspiracy theories suggested that Davis had the opportunity to carry out the alleged assassination due to their relationship; however, in 1991, Taylor's body was exhumed to test for poisoning, and no evidence was found. Experts concluded that Taylor died from cholera morbus, or acute gastroenteritis, likely caused by the Washington sewage system.
