Welcome to the fourth installment of "Crafting Live Music Videos - Behind The Scenes." In this episode, we dive deep into the heart of post-production as we unveil the detail of the timeline for one of 5 music videos we used in our film Witness Underground. I show a glimpse of our video editing process, showcasing how we turn a mountain of video and audio into a final live production music video. Three of these made it into the film and peices of the other two and their music was also used.
Join me as we explore my Adobe Premiere timeline. At the core of this creative symphony lies the full mixed and mastered audio from a the live performance, serving as the foundation upon which every other element synchronizes.
Every live performance capture is immensely improved with a little multi-camera magic. The main camera footage, was syncronized and skillfully cut to align with the base audio. Frame per frame the seamless harmony between sight and sound is the key to capturing the essence of a live performance, allowing the audience to feel every beat and emotion.
However, we understand that artistic endeavors are not without imperfections. In our quest for perfection, we've prepared three additional camera and audio tracks, recorded during other takes of the same song at the same live performance. These takes weren't selected by the artists. They weren't entirely satisfied due to small mistakes. Yet, these seemingly imperfect gems are a treasure trove for us as they grant us the opportunity to cover up any less-than-stellar footage captured during the good audio take that they were happy with.
As any seasoned filmmaker knows, challenges like these are par for the course. The art lies in the ability to turn obstacles into stepping stones, and in this case, we cleverly use the extra footage to artfully conceal any less polished visuals or use the additional footage to add energy and additional camera changes that wouldn't be possible with only a single take. This even allows us to "Cheat" the capture of an entire additional artist in some cases. This usually requires some timing tricks since no two takes are perfectly in time with eachother.
To ensure a comprehensive and visually stunning result, we intentionally captured video for all live performances of the same song. This foresight provides us with a vast pool of additional footage, meticulously shot with the purpose of serving as our secret weapon in the editing room.
This mid-process, Adobe Premiere Pro sequence comes alive with a mosaic of meticulously synced video and audio elements. Everything falls into place, each frame complementing the next, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of sight and sound. Watch the film and let me know what you think of the result!
