I am a big Star Trek fan and I have loved the transporter effect in The Next Generation since I first saw it. I did this effect using only Blender 2.70 (But you can use most any other compositor) and a video camera. It is super easy and free.

The first step in making this effect is shooting your footage you need a clean plate (Which is a shot with nothing in it that you want to be transported). And you need a shot of your actor pretending to be transported.
After you have your footage shot import your clean plate into Blender's VSE than the shot of your actor. Than make a fade between the two to where it looks like your actor is fading into the shot.
Then you will need to mask out your actor at the point where your actor is transporting than import your two transporting effects and apply your mask to both effect layers.
Do some color correction than your pretty much done.
