Happy International Zebra Day! 🦓
Meet Opal and Topaz, our two Grevy’s zebras here at DZCA. At 22 years old, these girls are considered geriatric, and their care is all about supporting healthy aging, from regular weigh-ins and specialized nutrition to positive-reinforcement training that helps with hoof care and medical checkups.
Grevy’s zebras are the largest zebra species, known for their narrow stripes, white bellies, and big mule-like ears. They’re also Endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and drought. Caring for Opal and Topaz helps support the larger conservation effort by allowing other facilities to focus on breeding, while also giving guests a chance to learn how actions like water conservation can make a difference for wildlife.
