The celestial pole slowly drifts across the sky due to precession meaning that the "pole star" changes over a period of time. When the pyramids were built, the North Pole Star was Thuban, not Polaris. Polaris and Thuban are 26 degrees apart. The precession cycle takes approx 26,000 years.
