Pranav Ranjit | Pranav Ranjit - Silent Shores for oboe and harp (second performance) @towardthesea_ | Uploaded February 2022 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
Performed by members of new music ensemble The __ Experiment: Ava Wirth, oboe and Danielle Kuntz, harp
First performance by Glenda Lindgren and Ben Albertson, who commissioned the piece: youtube.com/watch?v=tSsrmkD3kJI
"Silent Shores" is inspired by Martine Franck’s 1973 photograph Les Petites Dalles, which depicts a woman standing on the coast of Normandy amid a backdrop of towering cliffs. Despite never having visited northern France, I was immediately struck by the vividity of the scene, particularly the gentle arc of the beach and the contrast between a single human being and the imposing landscape surrounding her.
Through the voices of the oboe and harp, "Silent Shores" imagines the woman’s response to her vast yet beautiful surroundings in two contrasting sections. The first is solemn, mysterious, and resonant, while the second is full of life and exploration.
