An hour (or three) of focus per day kept up for a couple weeks can take you a LOT of places, and I took it here. This legendary piece was always on my ‘yeah right’ list, which I’ve been slowly chipping away at during this downtime.
People like to think of ‘The Black Page #1’ as a novelty because there are so many notes and the rhythms are so complex, but at its heart it’s a gorgeous modal jazz piece that’s always been one of my favorite @zappa melodies, and it definitely hasn’t disappointed in the learning department... an absolute treasure trove of brilliant concepts and ideas all rubix-cubed into a single page that still somehow manages to come off as musical.
Learning this piece has been a lifetime highlight (ongoing as you can tell) that I recommend to anyone willing to take it slow and piece it together bit by bit... SO worth it.
