The Art of Nature - Germany | POTATO FEAST in the GERMAN COUNTRYSIDE - When life wants us to be spontaneous - harvest cottage vlog @theartofnaturegermany | Uploaded October 2020 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
The potato fire that never took place and turned into a relaxed family feast to celebrate the end of the harvest season here in south Bavaria, Germany, taught me an important life lesson – to surrender and find new creativity, when things didn’t run according to the plan.

The beer we drink in the video is alcohol-free by the way. I don’t want to promote drinking alcohol by mistake, as we actually don’t like drinking alcohol so much (no proper Germans, I know XD). And if you wonder what we exactly had with the oven baked potatoes: My grandma prepared a mushroom sauce with onions and soy cream, a beetroot salad and an endive salad with warm grated potatoes. It was so delicious as my grandma is the best cook in the whole wide world and all the veggies, except the mushrooms, grew in her garden.

My family and I celebrated our potato harvest this weekend. Technically we wanted to make a traditional German potato fire, in which the potatoes get grilled in their own dried leaves and stems. I was so much in love with this idea since my grandma has told me about this tradition, that in the past was carried out by farmers and their workers after the last harvest day. But things went another way as the potato leaves got mushy during the first frost night. First, I was very disappointed when my grandma told me that, because I was so excited for the fire and to capture another lovely German tradition for you. But nature had different plans for me and I can do nothing else than accept it. It is ok that sometimes things don’t take place as we want them to. It’s just important that we don’t resign then. In those moments life wants to give us the opportunity to really get creative and it is up to us if we bury our heads in the sand or create something else that is often even more beautiful. I believe that these things happen for a reason, wheatear it is to remind us that being spontaneous is fun and enables us to really live in the present moment, or that something way better will happen.
It was a beautiful family feast with delicious food and lots of laughter. Without a fire, but with much joy. And I was reminded to go more with flow again and stop holding on to my plans and ideas too much, because the beauty of life is in the not knowing.
