Clinging to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997 — Positano is one of the most photographed towns in Italy. This walk begins with sunset views from above the pyramid of pastel houses, descends to the Byzantine Black Madonna in the 13th-century church, ends at the beach after dark, and stops at the cliffside nightclub Music on the Rocks.

Legend says Positano takes its name from a Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna being transported by Saracen pirates around the 10th century. When a storm stranded their ship, sailors heard a voice calling "Posa, posa" — "put me down." They brought the icon ashore, the storm calmed, and the town grew around the spot. That 13th-century icon still hangs above the altar of Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, visited at 54:24, under its famous dome of yellow, green, and blue majolica tiles. The Amalfi Coast was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
