I see the world as a constantly moving and changing landscape. It’s just part of a continuum. I see my career as being a sliver of that on the path to somewhere else.
I like precision. I like when things come together and you can’t see how they’re made. Because I want the point of the object not to be about how it’s made or even the material it’s made of, but the statement that it’s making.
There are forces at play in nature that affect things. They cause a tree to be bigger at the base and narrower at the top, or the branches to have a built-in flexibility so they won’t break every time the wind blows. And those kinds of things remain unseen, un-talked about, but they’re a major component of the design process.
Wood is a living thing. Its life may have been interrupted by its harvesting, but it retains that living quality to it. The way you process it and handle it—it’s never static. You have to build your object with the ability to expand and contract, or else it may self-destruct over time.
All of these things are literally a living process that you have to recognize and obey. I enjoy that challenge of trying to marry the beautiful object with the functional object.
Being an artist is a journey, and there are no directions. There’s a pathway that divides constantly into smaller pathways, and choices need to be made day to day. And each path that an individual chooses will be different from any other individual. I’m interested in continually exploring and taking risks and keep finding stuff that’s new and invigorating and exciting.
