The patron saint and traditional founder of the independent republic, Marinus was a Christian stonemason from the island of Rab who, according to tradition, settled on Mount Titano around A.D. 301 and founded a Christian community there. His feast day is celebrated on Sept. 3, traditionally considered the anniversary of his death in A.D. 366.
