At Wednesday’s General Audience, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the profound role of sacred music in the Church’s liturgy, continuing his catechesis on the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Focusing on the sixth chapter of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Pope Leo stressed that “singing and playing a musical instrument are acts of prayer.”
Far from being merely decorative, he said, sacred music unites the faithful in praising God and opens hearts to his grace. It should be dignified, rooted in Sacred Scripture, attentive to local cultures, and faithful to the Church’s musical heritage. Echoing Saint Ignatius of Antioch, the Pope invited Christians to join together in love and “with one voice sing to the Father through Jesus Christ.”
