Two suspects are behind bars after allegedly targeting the South Florida home of a couple killed in a Kenya helicopter crash — and police say this may just scratch the surface of a sprawling identity theft investigation.
Officers with the Coral Gables Police Department arrested 40-year-old Geybert Garcia and 24-year-old Melany Perdomo on Tuesday after investigators said they burglarized the home of 55-year-old Henry Parra and 42-year-old Adam Hlavaty.
Parra and Hlavaty were killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya.
Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak said Friday that investigators believe Garcia and Perdomo targeted the home after learning the couple had died. Police say a ping from the couple's stolen MacBook led investigators to Garcia and Perdomo.
"We believe right now, they were targeted the day they were killed in that crash," Hudak said during a news conference. "Which I find reprehensible."
Police say the suspects allegedly stole jewelry, artwork and vehicles from the home.
