A convicted felon turned a traffic stop for a revoked driver's license into a police pursuit that ended near the Salt Lake International Airport.

On Dec. 26, 2025, a Salt Lake City police officer attempted to pull over Atrayl Freitag, 39, after a license plate check revealed the car's owner had a revoked driver's license.

Freitag refused to comply with the officer’s signals to stop, and officers devised a plan to arrest him at a gas station, according to the police affidavit.

However, Freitag escaped and led officers on a chase that ended at the airport entrance.

Freitag was charged with two third-degree felonies and several misdemeanors. The misdemeanor charges were dropped in a plea deal, and he was sentenced to a drug treatment center and a 3-year probationary period.
