Snow is falling to low levels across parts of the South Island as a polar blast grips the country.
Police are asking people in Dunedin to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary due to snow fall and icy roads.
SH87 is closed from Outram to Middlemarch.
Road snowfall warnings are in place for Remutaka Hill Rd (State Highway 2), Lewis and Porters Passes and the Crown Range Rd.
MetService has issued a fresh road snowfall warning for Napier-Taupō Rd (SH5). The warning is in place from noon until 11pm tonight, with MetService advising that snow showers could fall to as low as 200m by this evening.
All primary and intermediate schools and DKA Dunedin Kindergartens between Mosgiel, Port Chalmers and Waikouaiti are closed for the day. East Otago High School in Palmerston is also closed.
Wind conditions have also disrupted Cook Strait crossings, with four Interislander sailings between Wellington and Picton cancelled.
