It’s time to clap your paws – our resident polar bears have started sharing their habitat! 🐾
Earlier this week, our polar bears ‘Yellé’ and ‘Siku’ had their first in person – er, in bear – introductions. Our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare team monitored as the two bears met for the first time without a barrier. During their first introduction session, the bears had calm interactions and even spent time playing in the pools together! They sparred, a natural polar bear behaviour akin to play wrestling that lets bears show their strength and establish dominance. We’re thrilled by the comfort they are showing with sharing a space – a testament to their care team’s thoughtful approach in letting the bears set the pace of introductions. Both Siku and Yellé have previously lived with other bears, and we’re excited to see this relationship develop as they spend more time together. 🥰
The Taylor Family Foundation Polar Bear Sanctuary spans over two acres, giving the bears plenty of space, but our care team has already noticed the two bears having naps within 10 feet of each other! 🥹 Having two bears share this habitat is an enriching social experience that brings them new sights, smells, sounds, and a special opportunity for companionship that supports their welfare and well-being. 💙
