Hazards have been dominant in competitive singles ever since Spikes got introduced back in generation 2. Hazards are an essential part of the competitive singles metagame, since switching is a key aspect of competitive singles and hazards can force progress throughout the match by forcing switches and punishing these switches with chip damage. Over the generations hazards have only been getting better with generation 3 increasing the maximum layers of Spikes to 3 layers and generation 4 introducing the meta defining Stealth Rock and also Toxic Spikes.
