💀 Team Skull wants to fight! 💀
If you've been following my Pokémon remixes for a while, you'll have noticed that I haven't tackled any kind of battle theme yet...well here it is, my first Pokémon-related battle theme: the fight with Team Skull members Guzma and Plumeria!
This piece actually started as a battle theme for Tapu Koko, which I began composing before Team Skull were even revealed. This changed upon their reveal, and I took it in the direction of a team villain battle theme instead. I think the design of Team Skull is probably the best "team x" design we've had since Team Rocket! I'm a big fan of the down-to-earth "gang" style villain, who frankly are a bit rubbish and clumsy at what they do yet still impose a threat, even if they aren't planning the domination of the universe.
We've heard the Team Skull field theme music in recent trailers, but I decided not to incorporate any of the themes or instrumentation in my own interpretation. Their theme motif is pretty mellow and goofy, and I do really like it, but I wanted to ramp up the sense of danger that Team Skull can really impose on the trainer. Despite their over-the-top clothing and silly dance routines, they are still serious about their Pokémon battling, especially the two leaders.
I've tried to keep this piece as "traditional" as possible, using various techniques that you'd usually hear in Pokémon battle music - fast descending arpeggio notes, key changes, switching between aggressive moods to heroic, major moods etc etc. Personally I find it so important to explore different moods in a boss battle theme; a composer needs to represent both sides of the fight in the piece. Pokémon's music does this so well, and I've tried to really emphasise this in my music here.
This is also the first time I've used live electric guitar in a public piece - now, I'm not a great guitar player, and my mixing of live guitar it pretty rough so please excuse the lack of polish on this! I didn't want to over-whelm the listener with the guitar so it only makes a few appearances. I thought it fitted the style of the villains. And what's a battle theme with electric guitar eh?
I'm enjoying creating these Sun & Moon fan pieces so much. As I mentioned in the previous video, this new world of Alola has so much inspired content to draw from. I haven't been this hyped for a Pokémon game in a long time. I honestly haven't seen one thing I dislike about this new generation so far.
