Overqwil has gained some minor amount of infamy for its Minimize-based strategies other people use with it. Me, I don’t use those strategies not because I’m against them or find them unfair, but because they are highly inconsistent and unpredictable. As a result, Poindexter, the Overqwil I use on this team, has a straightforward attacking strategy. He also has Swift Swim, rather than the Intimidate those Mininizing ones use, as Pelipper was very popular at the start of this season, and it’s fun to take advantage of their own rain.
00:00 - Battle #1
Type: Single Battle
Opponent: レタス (Lettuce)
Battle Court: Battle Arena
Music: Team MZ
My Pokémon: Socrates (Slowking) (Galarian), Juno (Beartic), Laverne (Dragalge)
Opponent’s Pokémon: Staraptor, Hippowdon, Sylveon
Hippowdon has been a problem for this team, due to its very high Defense allowing it to easily shrug off Grass and Ice attacks from my tem, both of which come from physical attackers. I have a lot of Pokémon weak to Ground attacks on this team, which was to lure out Pokémon like Garchomp or Excadrill, which this team can handle far more easily. Castilla (Bastiodon) is the only one on here able to do a one-hit KO on Hippowdon, but they only attack when they feel the time is right, so it’s hard to predict it and use Metal Burst accordingly. They will more likely attempt Yawn twice.
You can also see the 5% chance of Icicle Crash missing. It has 95% accuracy, meaning the misses kick in when you need it the most. Meanwhile, this Hippowdon pulls out Fissure, and it works…
04:05 - Battle #2
Type: Single Battle
Opponent: かるびび (Karubibi)
Battle Court: Battle Arena
Music: Trainer (Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow)
My Pokémon: Socrates (Slowking) (Galarian), Juno (Beartic), Castilla (Bastiodon)
Opponent’s Pokémon: Raichu (Kantonian), Meowscarada, Garchomp
My opponent brought in three Pokémon that Juno (Beartic) can hit super-effectively. Of course, they likely didn’t know that, and all three are so speedy (Meowscarada or Garchomp are near guaranteed to have Choice Scarves; they are the most common hold items for both species) that they can fight Pokémon with type and attack advantages over them.
(This Meowscarada was confirmed to have a Focus Sash.)
06:42 - Battle #3
Type: Single Battle
Opponent: DUDENOOB
Battle Court: Battle Arena
Music: Team MZ
My Pokémon: Socrates (Slowking) (Galarian), Juno (Beartic), Leonardo (Pyroar)
Opponent’s Pokémon: Torterra, ?, ?
Apparently, this Torterra could outrun anything on my team after a Shell Smash attack, even Juno (Beartic) under Slush Rush. It seems I had the wrong strategy going in, with the usual Chilly Reception switch into Juno (Beartic), considring they had a Focus Sash too.
09:13 - Battle #4
Type: Single Battle
Opponent: Vishwak
Battle Court: Battle Arena
Music: Trainer (Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald)
My Pokémon: Socrates (Slowking) (Galarian), Juno (Beartic), Castilla (Bastiodon)
Opponent’s Pokémon: Metagross, Krookodile, Dragonite
It’s been so long since I saw Krookodile in this game that I forgot it was even included in Pokémon Champions. Krookodile has been on my list for a while too.
It was a risky decision to switch into Juno (Beartic) once again with Metagross on the other side, as Mega Metagross has some very hard-hitting Steel-type moves, but Castilla (Bastiodon) can’t be switched into at all without even greater risk, as she relies on Sturdy. Mega Metagross is considered one of the less effective picks for the Mega Evolution though, not because it’s not that great on its own, but because four of the top five most used Pokémon overall—Garchomp, Incineroar, Basculegion, and Charizard—all hit Mega Metagross for super-effective damage, and Metagross has limited ways to fight them. Of course, I don’t use the top Pokémon on my teams, so I have to think harder to fight Mega Metagross, but I can handle it.
12:32 - Battle #5
Type: Single Battle
Opponent: れお (Reo)
Battle Court: Battle Arena
Music: Team MZ
My Pokémon: Socrates (Slowking) (Galarian), Juno (Beartic), Leonardo (Pyroar)
Opponent’s Pokémon: Malamar, Rotom (Heat), Staraptor
This was a very resilient Malamar! I know it was getting Defense boosts from Superpower and I had to basically brute force it, but that’s something I have to keep in mind from here on out.
Volt Switch on Rotom with a Chocie Scarf is perfectly valid…but it was weird to se it continue to use Volt Switch against Socrates (Slowking). Afraid to use Overheat? (Socrates (Slowking) does have ways to deal with that though.)
