So your initial foray into the game itself sees you being guided through the very basic "story" of the game that teaches you how the battles work, as well as giving you an entire gym for some reason! It's a silly setup, but realistically it's all you need for a game like this. Still, you get shown recruiting, going on the "ladder", and get to see a brand new Rotom accessory. What's not to love?
