another region, another friendly rival, but i’m 100% okay with hau being that friendly rival. he’s so happy. i hope all his dreams come true and he gets to eat all the malasada he wants (which might also coincidently be his dream idk i won’t judge)

this is a fanmade theme btw. i don’t usually have to specify that, but this is a special case where hau’s official battle theme is already leaked!!!!!crazy!!!!and it sounds nothing like this one LMAO haha yeeeeaaaah is it a good enough of an excuse to say, i started this before his official theme came out? and i know it’s a little aggressive at points, but i don’t care, because friendly battle themes that aren’t also boring to write are SO MUCH HARDER to make than i thought????? seriously. maybe it’s just not in my bag of tricks, or maybe i just need more practice idk. because this is NOT my first draft of this theme, i had another version that had much less tension but holy shit it was so snooze-worthy. and i couldn’t think of a way to justify making something like that just to follow a theme? it was like, “i make fun of pokemon battle music on twitter for being boring/too safe, and isn’t that exactly what i’m going with this???????just bc the character it’s being made for is a cute???? WHY AM I TRYING SO HARD TO PURPOSEFULLY MAKE A BORING COMP” and i was like, screw that noise. new theme. it starts out kind of childish which is good i think. Good Theming that is also Not Half Bad Probably. so it’s like a compromise. good job me. and then the rest of the piece is on that border of, “is this still a smol 13 yo boy who just likes pokemon and eating a lot? or is he actually trying in battle now what is this” and it might be weird but once again, it’s cool!!!!!! i think that’s fine. do you know why i think that’s fine? bc it’s a battle theme. and i think battle themes can be three things in media: "100% in-character theming", whatever that happens to b for said character, like indeed the official theme for Hau which is v obviously designed for him. then there’s "sorta in-character theming that is also self indulgent for the artist" (this is me all the time i think, like this piece here which strikes a Compromise at points but at others Doesn’t Care), and then finally there’s "Self Indulgence To the Max", which is like, the Parasyte OST for everything that’s not even just battle music lmao. like, the composer obviously likes certain things in composing, and he does it regardless of the tone of the show or scene or battle or whatever. but anyway my point is, i don’t think there’s a correct way to design a battle theme relatively speaking for something. there’s… more expected ways than others a lot of the time, but it’s okay to be self indulgent if u think that’ll make the best battle theme. and it’s also cool to Theme it Up if u want to go that route!!!!!! i struggle with finding a way to make Theming work in my favour, but there’s obviously a way to do it, regardless of how i bitch and moan about how pokemon battle music is boring probably as an indirect effect of the Tight Theming also coupled with my Taste in music, Good Great Amazing Battle Themes exist that are also Very In-Character. like, uh, a lot of other pokemon music. like Iris’ theme. that is SO in-character, but also happens to be My Taste and also Interesting so i like it. i don’t like hau’s official theme or the wild battle theme in sun/moon not because it’s Themed to be fun and light but because they’re uh messy and uninteresting comps respectively imo. and uh. that was my rant about battle themes. and i don’t know if i quite reached my intentions when i started writing it but i don’t know if enough ppl read these to care LOL. but yeah i had fun with this piece and i had a tough time figuring out how Theming works in video game battle music and i did a lot of thinking and i guess i’m better off for it and i hope i’ll come to master Theming better in the future. that’s all.
