Five attempts against Magma Boss Maxie, an event you will never see in any other battle with Maxie. If you are wondering where Camerupt is, don't worry, two grunts have them, and there are more magma grunts with land based teams. Mightyena is used by one of the very first grunts after Wattson.
By the time you reach Fallarbor town, you must have evolved pokemon. They sell evolution stones, so feel free to use them. As to why this boss fight is so difficult, even by hard mode standards, its because of plot importance. If you are going to be a villainous threat and have really good boss music, you better be able to have a bite that is just as good as your bark. Also, his team isn't mono fire types, because Flannery is literally another fire based boss coming up next. He's got a combination of inorganic pokemon mixed with land animals. Tabitha is no joke either, his Arcanine and Flygon are tough, especially without an ice type.
Maxie's Kaizo Team (Round 1):
Special mon: This is the only time you'll fight this thing in battle, because its easy to beat. Seriously, steel types not named Metagross or maybe Jirachi are so easy to defeat ingame, yet are very popular types in competitive and are annoying because of switching. Seriously, there are some truly terrifying threats that make this pokemon trivial, which is insulting to this particular pokemon. Do watch out though if you lack a cheri berry, you can't use ANY item in battle, and it does have a dangerous move that can kill you.
Crobat: A vastly superior upgrade to Golbat. Seriously, its a nightmare both ingame and competitive. No weak stats, insane speed, good coverage, it can waste you at this point if you do not evolve your pokemon. Most of the pokemon have lum berries, and you don't have extra turns.
Claydol: Very bulky, has mixed attacking sets, and surprising defensive type coverage that isn't water typed, its not exactly slow, and has explosion. This is very tough to kill, and can end you with suicide bombing.
Alakazam: And this is the reason why I lost. There aren't really great dark types available to deal with this, you are going to have to endure it, and try hitting with physical attacks, because it can live through some special attacks.
Dusclops: This is a different beast. Its made bulkier because there is no bulky ghost type. Its essentially a ghost type counterpart to umbreon. I'll be honest, you may have to sacrifice pokemon just for the purpose of wearing it down to the read, before revenge killing it, because it has rest, and will defeat most pokemon one vs one.
Houndoom: My camerupt was the only thing that can beat with, but it takes enormous damage. If you are wondering why I didn't use swampert against this....I made this game unfriendly to swampert because of how good it is, and lets just say, Houndoom has an attack that can deal with the mud fish.
Fun fact, this was revised from the original team, which were explosive pokemon, but in practice, Tabitha was the one giving me the most trouble, while I beat Maxie in one try. The changes made improved both bosses: Tabitha is still pretty hard, but Maxie is clearly more devastating.
The trickiest gyms to edit is the Fire gym and Normal gym. Wildcards are expected because I'm not putting unevolved filler fire types; if you claim to be stronger than non-gym trainers, you are going to prove it.
I don't use items because I disabled all of the items during battle. All because the AI in the third gen games are so bad that words cannot describe. They tend to cherry tap attacks, unlike Crystal. But the good news, the enemies will never use healing items either, but will have held items and stronger pokemon.
