Many women turn to addictions to try and cope with the symptoms of PMDD as no one is treating them with the dose and type of hormone treatments that they need.

This week on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, Natalie Sykes @pmddneurodivergencealliance, founder of the PMDD & Neurodivergence Alliance, joined me to talk about the years she spent using heroin and crack cocaine. as well as having other erratic lifestyle behaviours, before she understood about hormones.

The hormones progesterone, estradiol and testosterone act directly on the brain's opioid and dopamine receptors, so when levels of these hormones are low, many women seek ways of feeling happier and more positive. Clearly being prescribed hormone treatments is much more effective, and safer.
