Plug-in solar is now legal in Great Britain — but before you buy an 800W system and plug it into a socket, there are some important things you need to know.

I’ve been testing 800W solar microinverter systems for the last couple of months, with east, south and west-facing arrays generating almost 700kWh between them so far. In this video, I look at what the new UK plug-in solar rules actually allow, whether 800W is genuinely useful, electrical safety, registration, G98/G99, export, and how to work out whether a system could actually save you money.

There’s also a particularly strange wrinkle in the new rules: what happens if you buy exactly the same panels, inverter, cables and mounting hardware as a compliant package — but buy the components individually?

I also cover the new myplugin.solar registration website highlighted by Energy Saving Trust, why an 800W/G98-approved inverter doesn’t necessarily mean you have a compliant plug-in solar product, and why I’d personally still prefer a dedicated circuit for a permanent installation.

Useful official/current guidance

I’ll keep this section updated as the new plug-in solar registration process and compliant-product information develop.

Information in this video was checked on 27 August 2026, the day the new rules came into effect.

Coming next: I’ve been running separate east, south and west-facing 800W solar arrays. Subscribe to see what they actually generated and which orientation worked best.
