By utilizing the Sonic & Knuckles cartridges Lock-on Technology you could play as Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3. However, trying to do the same with Sonic 1 only allowed you to play the Blue Spheres minigame. Here is how Knuckles eventually became playable in both an unofficial and even official capacity!
