There are lots of ways to make a platform bed but I prefer to have it without LED lights or sharp corners that protrude outwards in the dark of night, waiting to make your shins bleed. This design is flush to the mattress and low to the ground and with a full toe kick all the way around because its just better for your body parts. The platform comes apart in two halves for easy moving and has ventilation holes that are concealed with the toe kick. I used cheap spruce lumber and one sheet of poplar plywood. The spruce is not the best quality and if you use this material you will need double the amount to account for waste factor, but still is cheaper than #2 pine. We got a Dreamcloud mattress and are very happy with it and the functionality of the platform design. The ventilation is important to allow moisture build up in the foam to dissipate. The construction method for this project was very clamp intensive but there are no exposed nails or fasteners on the outside. If this bed were paint grade, then the framing could be stapled instead of clamped. I found a new use for silicone bumpers as alignment pegs for the wood slats. also very helpful in the finishing process as all sides of the slat could be finished at once.
