On March 23rd, 1994, Wayne Gretzky proved he was indeed the great one. The hockey star scored his 802nd NHL goal, surpassing Gordie Howe. He already owned the NHL record for assists and points. After the game, Gretzky reflected on what he had accomplished.
Gretzky: “Somebodys gonna have to play 16 years of 50 goals a year. And that may happen. I think records are made to be broken. I think people like [Teemu] Selänne and [Sergei] Fedorov, and [Eric] Lindros, if he stays healthy, those three guys have a strong chance at it. But it’s a lot of goals and, like I said, Im not
kidding when I said Ive played a lot of good players. You gotta play good people to be able to do it.”
Update: Gretzky finished his NHL career with 894 goals and 2,857 points—records that have yet to be approached.

Magic Johnson: I am happy to be back.
Nearly three years after retiring from the Los Angeles Lakers when learning he was infected with the virus that causes AIDS, Magic Johnson returns to coach the team. Critics say the move is a publicity stunt designed to fill the thousands of empty seats at Lakers home games but Johnson says thats not why he was hired.
Johnson: Im here to do a job. Obviously they think that I can do a good job or they wouldnt have asked me to do it.
Fans do line up to buy tickets and the Lakers win their first game under Johnsons guidance, but, after 11 games, Johnson announces he will not return as coach of the Lakers for the 1994-95 season.
