How are planetary health and food security intertwined, and what does this mean for human and environmental well-being? This World Health Summit 2025 workshop explored how Earth system change, food production, nutrition, and health interact, and what integrated approaches are needed to support sustainable and resilient futures.
The session examined how current agricultural and food systems contribute to climate change, biodiversity loss, and other pressures on planetary boundaries, while Earth system disruptions increasingly undermine food security and diets. Speakers discussed how intensive agriculture, resource competition, and global inequities shape nutritional outcomes and contribute to malnutrition, lifestyle-related diseases, and infectious disease risks.
Participants explored how to assess and monitor critical interlinkages between the planet and food systems to identify risks and tipping points. The discussion emphasized the need for interdisciplinary research that brings together environmental science, agriculture, nutrition, health, social sciences, and economics. Transdisciplinary collaboration with societal actors was highlighted as essential for co-creating technological, economic, social, and policy innovations that advance prevention and strengthen resilience.
This workshop was part of the World Health Summit 2025 in Berlin and was co-hosted by the Leibniz Association, Leibniz Lab Systemic Sustainability, and the Leibniz Research Alliance INFECTIONS. Moderators and speakers included Ulrich Schaible (Leibniz Lung Center), Jochen Schanze (IOER), Mary Muthoni Muriuki (Ministry of Health, Kenya), Barbara Amon (ATB), Mahlet Degefu Awoke (IGZ), Michaela Lackner (Medical University Innsbruck), and Elhadj As Sy (Kofi Annan Foundation).
