-Google Maps shows Plaid Room Records surrounded by the Little Miami River just north of Cincinnati. Google Maps does not show how cool the source of the widespread Ohio Soul label Colemine Records is. Upon arrival, I instantly felt welcome. I noticed that the culture is so strong here even the most stubborn single-genre minded person would find it impossible not to absorb a little somethin’ new. The red REC light on the camera blinked and the hours flew by as I hung out with brothers and store owners, Terry and Bob Cole...
-Bob exercised his engineering skills to design the store that includes a permanent stage for in-store performances complete with house instruments, recording equipment and sound system. The large record bins sit on caster wheels for better space management. Bob has also designed and written his own inventory software with unique features I’ve never seen used anywhere else. The software allows the user to catalog new and used (yes, pre-UPC code) vinyl records, pull current market value from discogs (This means customers can see and get the best value selling or buying) and also includes powerful search features I never knew were possible. For example: not only can they pull up a discography search on Curtis Mayfield but they can tell me everything he’s collaborated or been credited on and if it is available today in the store. They can also plug in that rare record I’ve been searching for and ACTUALLY call me back when it arrives, even if I placed the request months ago!
-Terry is the creative force behind the label, the marketing and sales guy with an “under promise, over deliver” attitude and founding member of the label’s first band, The Jive Turkeys. Terry’s vision (in his own words) is to become Cincinnati’s representative for Funk & Soul and ultimately “The Funk & Soul Rep” for the Midwest. With his undying passion and creative abilities partnered with his brother’s shared passion and engineering skills, I believe his vision will come to fruition.
