Months ago I came across some interesting videos here on Youtube where the actual video audio had been replaced by the one recorded by some kind of microphone/recording device placed inside the engine bay of various cars, turbocharged cars to be precise. I fell in love instantly hearing the turbines chirping and whistling perfectly.
So I tried to understand how to do this, what equipment was necessary to me with all the opportune research I usually do when I discover something new. But after a while I shelved the "project".
A few weeks ago I finally decided to focus a bit better on this project in order to found and buy everything I need and make a first test, at least. Even my car isn't the best choice for this kind of videos the result is quite hilarious but really satisfying in my opinion.
I purchased a little lavalier microphone (a Rode smartLav+, which is the best mic I found in terms of price/sound quality) and fitted 20 centimeters far from both the intake pipe and the throttle body of my Fiesta's 1.25 litre 4-cylinder engine. I linked the microphone to a 6 meters extension cable and then plugged it into my Zoom H1 portable recorder. Then I made a short driving around the streets inside Monza Circuit (most of them unexpectedly closed by concrete jersey barriers -.-) recording the video with my Go Pro Hero 4. What you're hearing is the actual in engine sound recorded with the Rode lavalier and it sounds pretty clean to me both the metallic valves noise and the sucking of the air intake.
What do you think? Needless to say I need a turbocharged car...NOW!!

Last week iRacing released what is probably the first fictional car of the game, developed in direct collaboration with Dallara, the famous Italian race cars and chassis manufacturer. Its called iR-01 and its basically a futuristic formula car, containing elements of grand prix racing’s past: no driving aids (traction control, ABS), no DRS, a naturally aspirated, 3.0-liter V10 screaming up to 20,000 rpm, 900hp and a dry weight of just 600kg. On the modern side the things that stands out most are certainly the 18 wheels and the presence of those little virtual mirrors. Regarding my uploaded video at first I didnt mean to edit and upload it, since my plan in recording the POV gameplay and the external sound scenes was (and still is) to produce a big comparison with most of the V10 formula cars from other games (Assetto Corsa, Automobilista and RaceRoom). But then I had some fun setting the cameras around the track and recording those external clips, plus the cinematic ones for the intro trailer, that I thought it was ok to produce and upload it. Of course the comparison is coming too.
From my amateur, sim player, point of view the concept is phenomenal and I cant hide how much Id love something like this to happen in the future of Formula 1, but we all know the sad reality.. Anyway the iR-01 looks fantastic even with my extravagant paint scheme I used for RallyCross cars back in 2019. Regarding the sound, its not bad at all for sure but I think some of the others racing games I mentioned before did a better job in replicating it, especially for the external scenes.
Always speaking from my side as a casual player, the car feel quite easy to drive even with the suzuka preset setup (I only changed the final gear ratio if I remember correctly) but being out of iRacing for a while now, I forgot how their tyres model behaves and that they must be warmed up for at least two laps. Plus the fact that to do good lap times on this game you have very precise, clean and avoid using the throttle, leaving the car flow by itself, especially in those initial S. Upshifts should have been done at around 19,000 rpm and not at 20,000 as I did here.
The only thing that didnt make me appreciate the iR-01 is its behaviour in very fast corners, such as 200R (turn 12, after the tight left hairpin) and the famous 130R (turn 15, the fast left-hander before the last chicane) where the car feels like is levitating on the asphalt, like theres no downforce or something is stalling aerodinamically. And this feels really weird on the steering. Dont know if this issue can be fixed just by changing something in the cars setup or its more a problem of the actual model. If that is the case, they will surely fix it in the future with a quick patch.

A few laps of Mugello Circuit trying to tame this 1200hp Supra Mk4 with a pretty nice sound mod, especially for the external view (you can find the link to the mod below here).
Talking about the car, its basically a boat on four wheels, always floating on the asphalt in search of both front and rear grip. Well, I drove it with the stock setup, so it could be that it handles a bit better with different parameters (I would focus on reducing understeer) but for sure itll always have that dancing rear under acceleration due to the immense power. Be careful with the brakes because the harder you hit them the more the Supra wobbles.
Of the 5 laps I did, the first 3 are those where I tried to drive as clean as possible in order to set a good lap time, while the last 2 are basically non-sense ones, using lower gears in corners, hitting the throttle too early and doing wrong trajectories... In short, the laps you can do only in video games without being afraid of broke the car or get hurt in an accident.
Since I really like the external sound, I also recorded some scenes taken from the replay, trying to reproduce the positions where I usually film/take pictures when Im at Mugello Circuit during race weekends, and of course edited them together to make a complete external lap.

I was recently browsing through the folders on one of my hard disks and to my surprise I found this gameplay video that I recorded and edited back in January 2023. Yes, I didnt mix up the years.. It actually remained in my archives for a whole year without me remembering that it was ready to be posted and this makes you understand how much I have neglected my second channel in the last few years 🥲
So this is about some fictional recreation I wanted to put together of one of the very first video I saved on my favorites list back on Google Video. And yes Im talking about that old Googles free video hosting service which was used before they acquired Youtube in 2006/2007. Well that clip literally made me fall in love with the raw power of the Ferrari 412 T2 F1 car, driven in total anger by Gerhard Berger during the 1995 Monte-Carlo GP. Many years ago Ive already tried to assemble this recreation on various racing games but Ive never managed to obtain a result that satisfied me both due to my poor driving skills and the cheap gaming setup I had at the time. Now that Ive improved on both fronts what Im missing is a bit of free time to upload gameplays in a frequency better than one every three years.
So this gameplay was recorded on the fantastic Automobilista 2, a racing simulator game created by @ReizaStudios and released in 2020, which I managed to get my hands on properly only last winter (2022-2023) when it was updated to V1.4.5.2 version. In the meantime the game has been further improved by making changes to the physics of the cars and tires and the V1.5.5.4 version just got released, which I still have to try.
Enjoy some laps I did of the Circuit de Monaco with Reizas Formula V12, a 412 T2 in disguise, trying to replicate (sometimes a little too exaggeratedly) those amazing Bergers powerslides!
