Hello, and welcome again to Places - Lost in Time, a series that looks back on the tale of places and locations that have existing within living memory or photographic record, but are now lost to the pages of history.
In this episode, we head to northern England, where tucked into the hills of South Yorkshire, the city of Sheffield, once famous for its coal mining and steel industry, attempted to revive its economic fortunes by way of constructing an international airport on land near the former Tinsley marshalling railyard to the east of the city, the express purpose of which was to appeal to a business-orientated clientele.
Sadly, what optimistic forecasts for a market beating and competitive facility serving the heart of South Yorkshire were all wrong, and within only four years of its opening in 1998, Sheffield City Airport had closed to commercial traffic, its inability to expand its infrastructure, combined with wider economics in the aviation market and not nearly enough demand to justify the airport, contributing to its premature closure.
