Incredible close range intercept of an extremely photogenic tornado in Akron, Colorado on May 23, 2021.
After the incredible events of the day before in Brush, A similar environment was in place over the same area in Easter Colorado, This time, I sought to get much closer to the action.
Just like the day before, the chase began in Sterling, Colorado with an almost identical target area. Tornadoes seemed likely somewhere in northeast Colorado, now it was time to figure out where.
For this chase I planned on meeting up with my friend Chris who would be joining me for the next few days. We both decided to meet up near Joes Colorado to begin the chase, however something unexpected would occur before that could happen..
Disappointed and set back $350 after my unfortunate encounter with the bird. Chris and I started to make our way west towards a developing supercell that I had been keeping an eye on.
As we drew closer, a monster HP supercell came into view.
After waiting for the timing to be correct, we cautiously approached the storm and as if it were waiting for us, something interesting started to happen..
Just as suddenly as it appeared, the tornado dissipated. It didn’t matter though, me and Chris had just scored one our greatest intercepts to date.
Despite our excellent positioning, the storm was going increasingly outflow dominant, however signs were still visible that indicated the storm was still capable of producing more tornadoes.
While repositioning to the north the wind suddenly reversed direction and started to blast straight back towards the mesocyclone like it was being pulled into a black hole.
From here a large rotating wall cloud developed and for a moment I though the storm would almost certainly produce another tornado. And while there were likely ground circulations under it, I could not visually confirm it.
Soon after, the supercell was absorbed by a line of storms that had developed to its west and with the situation becoming increasingly dangerous, we decided to bail to the east.
While there were some supercells developing in the tail end of the line, We could tell the day was pretty much over so me and Chris sat back and enjoyed the days encore performance at sunset, which to me was indescribable…
