The C minor key of the iconc anime OP Cruel Angel’s Thesis matches Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, op. 13, and I thought Beethoven’s broken octave bass would fit the pop sound of Cruel Angel very well, so here is the result of the mash-up!

Some extra notes:
- Most of the rhythms and patterns are taken directly from Beethoven, but since the original is for only 2 hands, I added some extra rhythms to fill in the texture.
- I got inspired to include some jazz harmonies after watching Fonzi’s take on the song (youtu.be/WE-xUMnlGF0?t=102).
- The 2nd theme at 1:06 incorporates the hand crossing and ornaments from Beethoven’s original.
- The 2nd movement section puts the verse melody in A-flat major (originally in E-flat) to match Beethoven’s key, and I thought the mood of Beethoven suits the Cruel Angel very well!
- I included some of the background chorus in the upper register in the 3:31 section.
- The main themes of the 3rd movement were difficult to transform into Cruel Angel, so I only used the coda section, and did a long build up to the end to the climax.
- I used Beethoven’s humor with the “fake” quiet ending and sudden fortissimo in the last bar.
