In this video I head to a local stomping ground for some good ol’ landscape photography on traditional analog black and white film. My location of choice was Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, California, a beautiful park where I take students all the time for photography classes and private photography lessons in Orange County.
When doing landscape photography with my 6x17 panoramic film camera, I often go out with only a rough idea of what I want to shoot, but this time I ventured out to create a very specific composition. It's a shot I'd been pre-visualizing since my last visit there - an ultra-simplistic black and white panorama showcasing three palm trees along the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
As a Southern California native, one of my favorite things to do is create beautiful fine art landscape photography of the local beaches, and as a photography instructor, I’m glad I can share with you my process for taking photos through these on-location videos. My real passion lies in traditional analog photography, especially in medium format, 6x17 panoramic, and large format 4x5.
My film of choice for this photo shoot was Ilford Delta 100 black and white film. The camera is a Shen-Hao HZX-45IIa with 6x17 roll film back and a Nikkor 90mm f/5.6 SW lens. Filters used are a Lee Circular Polarizer and Lee 10-Stop BigStopper filter. Tripod by Gitzo and tripod head by Really Right Stuff (BH-55 LR). The light meter you see me using is a Pentax Digital Spot Meter, same as what Ansel Adams used.
