It’s a big episode with tons of images and a lot of things to go over, starting with Brad’s daughter Lily joining us to share about her first experience doing bird and wildlife photography at age 13. It was a visit to an Atlantic Puffin colony which is a great way to kick things off and Lily captured some incredible images! After that Brad shares about his time with some local shorebirds and some insane back-lit conditions, then he headed to another more distant location in Newfoundland and worked with more shorebirds including Semipalmated Sandpipers, Spotted Sandpipers, and a Black-bellied Plover. He then spent time with some amazing Caribou and captured more incredible back-lit images showing off their glowing velvet antlers.
I share about my experience photographing Caribou on the other side of Newfoundland with Emilie. We had some incredible light and incredibly friendly animals that approached close enough for wide angle photography. Then I share about my experience with some shorebirds including Ruddy Turnstones, Spotted Sandpiper, Red Knots, and some Common Terns in flight. Next up I share about my Caribou workshop where 4 others joined me and how I found a group of 4 fox kits that we spent a lot of time with.
We wrap up the show picking our favorite low key images with black backgrounds for this week’s #wildlifephotochatchallenge and we share this episode’s challenge theme. Yes, we realize we made a mistake and chose the same theme of Low Key for this week’s challenge so you get to share more of those!

@TheAndyTortoise Smoke makes the sun more orange because smoke particles are larger than air molecules and scatter the light in something called Mie scattering - which removes shorter wavelengths (like blue) more efficiently than longer wavelengths (red, orange). Smoke also contains carbon compounds which absorb blue light. You just end up with more orange and red wavelength light to see.
