In 1958, Dr. Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod-Jackson were married at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Selma, Alabama. They had met five years prior at a picnic, and together they went on to have a daughter, Jawana, and built a life that carried them through the Selma Voting Rights Movement and beyond.
Richie Jean's wedding gown was made by Priscilla of Boston, a renowned bridal salon known for classic, romantic styles. The dress is made of silk and Alencon lace, highlighted with pearl embroidery motifs, and her silk illusion veil is attached to a crown of pearls.
When The Henry Ford acquired the Jackson Home in 2023, the gown was included in the home's contents. It has been lovingly conserved and was recently photographed to be added to our Digital Collections.
