Joseph “JC” Carey (aka JCPhotoMedia) is a lifetime image maker who like so many photographers was terrified of lighting until he was gifted with a lighting class in 2007. The class wasn’t very good (being kind) but it lit a fire to figure out how to add lighting to his creative arsenal. That gift changed everything. It transformed him from someone who barely took pictures of people and knew nothing about lighting into someone still trying to figure out how to light everything.

The next 16 years have passed with him being blessed with a daughter and a career doing what he loves while meeting amazing people. Over the last 8 years, he has found that his passion is bringing the light to students and showing them how to go from Fear To Flash.

In this lighting demo, pro portrait and headshot photographer Charles Chessler will show you how to transform a small space into a fully functional one-light headshot studio. He’ll also show you his compact gear, which you can carry anywhere.

Join Charles as he shares his creative process. He will guide you step-by-step from start to finish, including setting up and positioning your gear, explaining the key settings on your camera, light placement, and any tips for getting the most out of a minimal setup. By the end, you'll see how easy it is to create professional-quality headshots in the most unexpected places.

Charles Chessler is a NYC-based headshot and portrait photographer.

He's a late bloomer and thrilled to be doing the work he loves. Wanting to be mobile in the city, he put together a studio kit that he can take on the subway, and he's looking forward to sharing that with you today.
Charles is also a proud ambassador with Wildlife Conservation Non-Profit, Wild Tomorrow, and can't quite believe he gets to go to South Africa and help the cause of conservation through photography.
