Making a 1912 Suffragist Dress on an Antique Sewing Machine Historical Belle 2024-10-05 | Earlier this year I made a 1912 dress with Butterick retro pattern B6093 themed for the American Suffrage Movement. The 1910's were a HUGE time for the American Suffrage Movement. From the 1913 Women's Procession in Washington D.C. and then the start of WWI where women showed the country just how valuable they are. I had been wanting to make a Suffragist dress for quite some time. I had meant to make it in 2020, but then only got the sash done, so here we are 4 years later, in another election year, and the time felt right. I led a suffrage station during a homeschool day at my old job which gave me a good deadline to get the dress done by. I made this dress out of white bedsheets and white was the main color suffragists wore. It stood out well in Black and white photographs, provided a unified look, and combated unfeminine stereotypes they were up against. It Took Me Three Years to Make this Dress: Mermaid Formal Dress Historical Belle 2024-09-21 | This dress has been 3 years in the making....I was originally going to make this dress in 2020 for my Senior Formal, but when my formal got canceled due to Covid, the fabric, patterns, and plans just sat on a shelf. Some people told me to go ahead and just make it at the time, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I would quite literally be all dressed up with no where to go. But I hoped that an opportunity would present itself in the future that would be the perfect time and event to make and then wear this dress to, so I held onto it.Fast-forward 3 years and my husband and I are planning to go on a cruise to the Bahamas. The last night of the cruise was the unofficial Elegant Night. It was perfect. I would get to wear my mermaid dress upon the sea!! It was better honestly then I could have dreamed. On Elegant Night, everyone put on their best clothes for dinner. My husband wore his tux with tails, and I got to wear my mermaid inspired formal dress, and then I got to feast upon a lovely Italian dinner onboard a cruise ship with my husband was a fantastic experience. 18th Century Mens Breeches Historical Belle 2024-08-24 | In this historical costume sewing tutorial I will show you how I made a men's 18th century breeches using the Mill Farm Drop Front Breeches Pattern that I got from Burnley and Trowbridge. I had never made breeches before, and I found it rather confusing. So I'm not sure if I did everything right or the correct way, but I did make wearable breeches that look right. I am trying to recreate the outfit that Roger wears to his wedding with Brianna Fraser in the Season 5 opener of Outlander. I also made a coat that goes with the breeches that I made earlier. Making a Historically Accurate Cosplay of Brianna Frasers Wedding Dress from Outlander Season 5 Historical Belle 2024-07-13 | When I saw Brianna Fraser's Wedding Dress in the Season 5 opener of Outlander, I knew this was something I wanted to make one day. It went onto my Pinterest board, but then not much happened, until the perfect opportunity arrived. Atlanta Historic Dance partnered with the Northeast Georgia History Center to put on the Fraser's Ridge Wedding Ball, which I, as a member of both parties, organized. Part of the ball was going to be a reenactment of Brianna Fraser and Rodger Wakefield saying their marriage vows and it was decided that my husband and I would play Brianna and Rodger. So of course, we needed proper outfits. I decided to make Brianna's wedding dress in a more historically accurate manner than the show portrays it as, because that is what I do, and also I want to be able to wear it more places. How to Make an Early Regency Era Dress Historical Belle 2024-06-15 | In this historical sewing tutorial I will show you how I made an early Regency Era Dress using Simplicity Pattern by American Duchess S8941 and the American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dress Making. This dress is most fashionable for the years 1795-1805. This style of dress has a high empire waistline and is described as a "Round Gown." A Round gown in the regency era can best be defined as a dress with a bodice and skirt joined to create a single garment. Hence, it goes all the way around. It does not open in the front to show a petticoat. This round gown made of white muslin is very similar to the styles of the Chemise a la Reine that were popular in the decade prior, and certainly take inspiration from the style, but are uniquely their own. I love how the muslin gathers in this dress and creates a skirt perfect for billowing in the wind. When in Rome Dress as the Romans Do: Making a Tunica, Stola, and Palla Historical Belle 2024-02-24 | I organized a When in Rome homeschool day at the Northeast Georgia History Center where I work as the Director of Education as a fun way for our students to learn about Ancient Rome. For this event I needed an outfit. I researched what a roman woman would have worn and decided to make a tunica, stola, and palla inspired by the ones that are on a famous statue of Julia Augusta wife of Emperor Augustus. This Roman garb would be a great project for a beginner who is just starting to build their historical wardrobe. It is all straight seams and rectangles. I did not use a pattern for this outfit but rather self drafted as I went with my measurements. Ruthie Smithens is the best friend to Kit Kitteridge whose story is set in the 1930's. 1940s Vintage Christmas Dress Inspired by Mollys Surprise | The Molly McIntire Project Historical Belle 2023-12-30 | I hope you all had a Merry Christmas! My family had a very Merry Christmas indeed and I am glad that I got this 1947 Vintage Christmas dress done in time for the festivities. This dress was made by using Vouge pattern 9346 and is a vintage pattern from 1947, which is a couple years after the Book Molly's Surprise is set (1943), but close enough. In this video I will show you how I made this vintage Christmas Dress inspired by the American Girl Doll Molly McIntire.I really enjoyed wearing my vintage Christmas dress made of green velvet to a couple of Christmas events, most importantly Christmas Eve Service which is where Molly wears her green velvet Christmas Dress in the story. While I was wearing the dress to Christmas Eve Service, I really felt like I was brining the story to life. In the WWII spirt that is so evident in Molly's stories I took and old gown and remade it into this dress. The reason to be thrifty with fabric for your clothes is because on March 8, 1942, the US War Production Board (WPB) issued order L-85 with the goal of 15 percent reduction in the amount of textiles used in women's wear.I really enjoyed rereading the book Molly's Surprise by Valerie Tripp. So many elements of the story really resonated with me and are traditions that my family does around Christmas Time as well. Following a 1940s Vintage Makeup Tutorial Historical Belle 2023-12-09 | Hello Everyone! I have watched SO MANY make up tutorials from the 1940s and have complied them here to show you the ULTIMATE 1940s make up tutorial. Of course, I share more tips that go along with my face shape, which is a circle, but try to mention what would have been done for others as well.The 1940's is a mix of glamours with a statement red lip, but also about keeping it natural. Despite many luxuries being rationed due to WWII in the 1940s make up was not. In fact, the British government believed that makeup kept moral up. "Beauty is your Duty" or "Keep your Beauty on Duty" were slogans seen on posters. The American Marine Corps Women’s Reserve even invited Elizabeth Arden to create a lipstick that would be part of their uniform. These governments made clear that looking beautiful was a major way in which women could contribute to the war effort and be patriotic. I tried to have historically accurate makeup for this tutorial, and purchased many products from Bésame which is a wonderful company who reproduces historical make up meticulously for accuracy and authenticity. I am so excited to share with you the debut of the Molly Learns a Lesson Outfit. The 2nd dress in the Molly McIntire Project series! During this series I will be recreating the outfits that the American Girl Doll Molly McIntire wears on the covers of her original 6 book series.In Molly Learns a Lesson by Valerie Tripp, Molly deals with the challenges of 3rd grade multiplication and doing a group project with the girls in her grade to help with the war effort. Even though Molly's year is 1944, the 6 book series takes place from 1943-1945. Molly Learns a Lesson is set during the November of 1943. I got the fabric for this jumper at JoAnns last holiday season. It was part of their Christmas Collection. A Haunting in Venice | What to Wear to a Séance | 1947 Dress Historical Belle 2023-09-30 | When the invitation came, I could hardly believe it was true!! We were invite to attend a special séance at the @wrensnestatl in honor of the @ahauntinginvenice premier! We so enjoyed getting to tour the house, meet the other guests, and hear the wonderful storytelling of a ghost named Violet. It truly felt like we had been transported into an Agatha Christie novel. The next night we were invited to a pre-screening of the movie. It was sooooo good!! I was worried it was going to be really scary because the trailer makes is look like a horror film, but it’s not. It’s the Agatha Christie Poirot you know but with perhaps a fun supernatural twist? #ahauntinginvenice comes out in September 15th, which was Agatha Christie’s 133rd birthday! I was also asked to help with trivia before the movie which was extra fun!! Did you know that the character Tina Fey plays in @ahauntinginvenice Ariadne Oliver bears the most resemblance to Agatha Christie herself of all of her characters? They are both successful detective novelists. My outfit was inspired by the green color palate that Ariadne Oliver wears in this movie. For the occasion I made this 1947 ensemble, which happens to be the exact year the movie is set! I used Butterick Pattern 5214. In the movie description it just says it’s set in “post WWII Venice” so I guess, and got it on the nose! I styled it in different ways for the the different events. Our First SCA Event: Crown List Tournament Kingdom of Meridies Historical Belle 2023-09-23 | Through following different costumers and general being on the internet, I have stumbled upon the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). The SCA defines itself as "an inclusive community pursuing research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture. The lives of participants are enriched as we gain knowledge of history through activities, demonstrations, and events."Also according to their website "the SCA community includes over 30,000 members in 20 kingdoms around the globe. Our participants learn about the arts, skills, and culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance in an atmosphere of fun, through tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, classes, hands-on workshops, and more."I researched my local group, attended a few meetings, and decided that this sounded like a lot of fun!! The 1st event that my husband and I attended was the Spring Crown List Tournament Kingdom Arts and Sciences Competition for the Kingdom of Meridies. Do to our work schedule we were not able to make it to the site for the Arts and Sciences Competition, but I am excited for the next one. We did get to witness a feast, a ball, court, and the crown tournament. We have a wonderful time and decided to become official members. How to Make a Medieval Kirtle | NO PATTERN NEEDED: Easy Sewing Tutorial Historical Belle 2023-09-09 | In this video I will show you how I made a medieval kirtle (or dress) with no pattern and just a T-Shirt. This Kirtle is styled as it would have been for a middling sort of woman in the high middle ages particularly the 13th Century (specifically 1200-1250 Europe) Today, these tunics are sometime colloquially called "T-Tunics" as they kind of look like a T when laid flat.
