Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival presents to you “Meet the Filmmakers”. This episode features the film “Thanks for Nothing” and its director Stella Marie Markert, in conversation with Sofia Fe Soe.

“Thanks for Nothing” is Stella Marie Markert’s first feature film, which explores themes such as female suffering and the experience of being a young woman. Throughout the history of storytelling, there have been countless stories about dying young women – Markert wanted to deconstruct this motif, and this idea gave birth to the film’s characters. In the film, the director gives a voice to young people whose worries, thoughts, and feelings are often not taken seriously in the adult world. Although the film deals with serious topics, Markert weaves humour into them as well – according to her, humour has always been one of her personal coping mechanisms, and she tries to find something to laugh about even in difficult situations.
Stella Marie Markert studied film production at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg from 2017 to 2022 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in film directing at the Babelsberg Konrad Wolf Film University. “Thanks for Nothing” is her first feature film, but her filmography also includes several successful short films. Her short film “Hot Dog” (2019) was screened at various international festivals. In 2019, Markert took part in an exchange programme at the Paris film school La Fémis, and in 2021, her film “Handbook of a Privileged European Woman” won an award in the “Europe in Film” competition initiated and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

“Aitäh eimillegi eest” on Stella Marie Markerti esimene täispikk mängufilm, mis käsitleb selliseid teemasid nagu naiste kannatused ja nooreks naiseks olemine. Jutuvestmise ajaloos leidub rohkelt lugusid surevatest noortest naistest – Markert soovis seda motiivi dekonstrueerida ja sellest ideest sündisid ka filmi tegelased. Režissöör annab filmis hääle just noortele, kelle muresid, mõtteid ja tundeid täiskasvanute maailmas sageli tõsiselt ei võeta. Kuigi film puudutab tõsiseid teemasid, põimib Markert neisse ka huumorit – tema sõnul on see olnud alati üks tema isiklikke toimetulekumehhanisme ning ta püüab ka keerulistest olukordadest pea alati leida midagi, mis paneks naerma.
Stella Marie Markert õppis aastatel 2017–2022 filmitootmist Baden-Württembergi filmikoolis Ludwigsburgis ning jätkab praegu õpinguid filmirežissööri magistriõppes Babelsbergi Konrad Wolfi filmikoolis. “Aitäh eimillegi eest” on tema esimene täispikk mängufilm, kuid tema filmograafiasse kuulub ka mitu edukat lühifilmi. Tema lühifilm “Hot Dog” (2019), linastus mitmetel rahvusvahelistel festivalidel. 2019. aastal osales Markert vahetusprogrammis Pariisi filmikoolis La Fémis ning 2021. aastal pälvis tema film “Handbook of a Privileged European Woman” auhinna Saksamaa välisministeeriumi algatatud ja rahastatud konkursil “Europe in Film”.
