Everyone still calls it Petticoat Lane, even though it officially became Middlesex Street almost 200 years ago.
For years, history books put the change at around 1830 — but newspaper evidence now shows the name Middlesex Street being used as early as 1822, with an 1824 report actually describing it as the street’s “new name.”
Nearly two centuries later… nobody seems interested in calling it anything but Petticoat Lane! 😂
