What happens when a new generation tries to rebuild one of the greatest albums ever recorded?
In 1966, Brian Wilson created Pet Sounds—an astonishing combination of the Beach Boys’ harmonies, the Wrecking Crew, unusual instrumentation, and a recording studio transformed into an instrument of its own.
More than fifty years later, a group of teenagers decided to learn the whole thing.
Not just “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
Not just “God Only Knows.”
The entire album.
In 2019, 13 young vocalists and six instrumentalists from Los Rios Rock School spent months learning the intricate harmonies, arrangements, dynamics and instrumental parts of *Pet Sounds*. Then they entered Hybrid Studios in Santa Ana and attempted something remarkable: putting Brian Wilson’s masterpiece back together themselves.
This episode of The Common Room travels from the original 1966 sessions to that extraordinary 2019 project—and then asks:
**Where are those kids now?**
We explore “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Sloop John B,” “God Only Knows,” “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times,” “Caroline, No” and “Good Vibrations,” along with the musicianship hiding beneath their seemingly effortless sound.
And we discover that this is about more than an old record.
It is about cultural inheritance.
A masterpiece survives not simply because somebody preserves the master tape. It survives when another generation listens to it, studies it, learns how it works—and makes the music live again.
Six years after the Los Rios recording, their performance of “Sloop John B” passed one million views. Some of those teenage musicians continued into music and the music business. One eventually returned to Los Rios to teach another generation.
The student became the teacher.
And the music continued.
