Doug and his colleagues have pioneered a technique to transfer #DNA between two human eggs, which could ultimately be used to stop #mitochondrialdiseases in their tracks.
Mitochondrial diseases are where there is a disturbance of the mitochondria, which are the batteries in cells. These batteries start to fail which has major consequences on organs that require a lot of energy like the brain, heart, or muscles. Patients can develop very serious problems with for example strokes, dementia, heart failure, or profound failure of the muscles.
At the moment there is very little in the way of #treatment. None of the existing treatments will cure patients and they're often left with severe disabilities or die.
Professor Doug Turnbull's research is looking to develop cures or prevention for mitochondrial disease. His team are particularly interested in those diseases passed down from mother to child where the genetic defect is present in the mitochondria themselves. A new technique has been developed that uses a complicated IFV that involves collecting eggs and transferring their chromosomal DNA from an egg with normal abnormal mitochondria to an egg that has normal mitochondria.
