Update February 2025
In this video we refer to a letter of support from your research organisation, this has been replaced in the new UKRI Funding Service by a statement of commitment and support that you include in your application as the response to the research organisation support question.
Watch this video for help and advice as an early career researcher applying for a new investigator grant and to learn what is expected from a great application.
The new investigator grant is aimed at #researchers who are transitioning to independence. You can apply across all areas of the MRC’s remit. All successful new investigator research grant holders are eligible to register for the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) #mentoring scheme.
Applicants are expected to combine time spent on the new investigator project with a portfolio of other activities, such as time spent on other research grants or clinical duties, teaching, administration duties, or other time spent in faculty (this list is not exhaustive). As such, applicants are normally expected to request funding for up to, but no more than, 50% of their contracted working time.
The duration of a new investigator grant should be determined by what the research project needs and the case supporting the transition to independence. New investigator grants do not normally last for less than three years as it is unlikely a shorter period of time will fully enable the transition to independence to be achieved.
