On Friday, September 1st we proudly presented Galaxxu Into the Parhelion of Imagined Truths (ORD), Abhilasha Chebolou’s free jazz group Turtle Boat (CMH), and Rinn Lee’s solo project mimete (CMH). Performance took place in the Columbus Cultural Arts Center’s 3rd floor classroom. Video credits: Matt Morton.
Our 2023 touring musician program is supported by New Music USA.
About the artists: Turtle Boat features the compositions of Abhilasha Chebolu with additional contributions by Alex Burgoyne. Though diverse in experience, this band finds common ground through their shared investment in exploring the more introspective side of free playing. In addition to their capacious listening practice (informed by Arvo Pärt, Heavy Vegetable, the Smashing Pumpkins, Thingy, and YMCK as much as Ornette Coleman and Paul Motian), Turtle Boat pursues a generous improvisatory dynamic concerned with playing not what is possible, but what is necessary.
