Can protection through solar panels mitigate the effects of climate change on viticulture and even make wine production more sustainable?
Hochschule Geisenheim University along the Rhine River in Hessen, Germany, addresses these questions in the “VitiVoltaic“ project. Solar panels are installed above a vineyard to generate electricity while grapes are grown underneath.
Because the solar panels are installed at a height of 3.5 to 4 meters. with no solid ground beneath them it is important to install very durable solutions, so that later on, during operation, they ultimately require little to no maintenance.
