Today we will be looking at a Pentair Ultratemp pool Heater and some of the more common issues and maintenance tasks that can be conducted to keep this unit running properly. All of these seem to degrade from the environment in the same way and have the same flaws which can be mitigated for longer service life without spending thousands of dollars on repairs.

As we begin with screw removal its clear that none of the clips holding the screws are intact, long since rusted away. An 11mm remove the 2 top acorn nits securing the fan shroud. Once the front covers were removed this was followed by the cover removal for the electrical panel. In this area we can see the capacitor that would be replaced if the fan or compressor were just humming, this is usually the culprit. Many times the failed ones are bulging. Cables to the fan are recorded and then disconnected from their position, allowing the cables to be pulled through which then allowed for the entire fan and shroud to be removed.

The fan and mounts were found to be completely destroyed, The inside of the heater was so dirty no drain holes can be seen, so it started with a vacuum and then a hose to wash out. New 7/8in maintenance drain holes were drilled into the bottom of the heater in several areas to allow for more effective cleaning. Eventually, small drain holes could be seen around the perimeter. These were filled with 7/8 nylon plugs after the cleaning so the holes wouldn't pull air during operation.

Rusted screws that were drilled out are now removed one by one. Then, certain plastic pieces from the old fan assembly will be needed so the fan should is completely disassembled. The fan mount and motor condition was terrible.

Several tests were done to remove the rust stains from the plastics, Ultimately a product called Iron Out did a fantastic job removing all rust stains. While this is occurring, replacement parts are purchased. Furthermore, areas within the heater where rust is forming on parts will be treated with POR-15 after preparation. Coil cleaning is also conducted from the inside out.

The Motor and fan was then reassembled, but as the device was stored for a few months, I found that rust already started to reappear, taking the fan assembly apart again to coat everything with POR-15.

For final assembly, new weather resistant clips are used. The studs are coated above in anti-seize. then the fan shroud is reinstalled followed by associated cabling. With the wiring completed the power is reapplied for a smoke test. Thereafter, all shrouds are reinstalled for a complete evaluation.
