In honor of Penguin Awareness Day, here are some penguin facts from their strikingly similar distant cousin. 🐧
Although they may resemble miniature penguins, Dovekies and penguins are in different families. Why, then, are they so alike? The resemblance between Spheniscidae (penguins) and Alcidae like Dovekie is the result of an ecological principle known as convergent evolution. 🤝
Convergent evolution occurs when organisms that aren’t closely related evolve in similar ways. In the case of Dovekies and penguins, each developed separate yet similar adaptations to frigid environments at opposite ends of the earth, including:
- thick layers of fat and down feathers for extra warmth;
- small, stiff wings used to “fly” underwater in pursuit of prey;
- and webbed feet with strong toenails.
A major difference between the two families? Penguins, of course, can’t fly. 🐧
