Peleliu features hundreds of caves and tunnels, primarily constructed by Japanese forces in 1944 for an in-depth defensive fighting tactic against the attacking US Forces. The caves were built to withstand the heavy pre-invasion bombardment and became fortified defensive fighting positions during the battle. The caves are still filled with Japanese and at times American artifacts from the battle.
