🎶 When I woke up this mornin’, I was feeling all wrong…

The title for Peggy Lee’s first big solo hit for Capitol Records (co-written with husband and musical partner Dave Barbour) was inspired by a particularly good day she’d had while home pregnant with their daughter. And then, not long after baby Nicki was born, the rest of the song came to her:

“As I busied myself with housework, I began to sing a little ‘dummy’ melody, and, as the words kept popping in, I put down the vacuum or whatever and wrote them down. When it was finished, I put Nicki in her baby buggy and practically ran down to my sister’s apartment house, called up to her window and sang my song. I think she always took some pride in having been the first person to hear ‘It’s a Good Day!’”

Peggy’s July 12th, 1946 Capitol Studios recording became her 7th solo hit, and one of her most enduring signature songs.
