On Aug 13, 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared Mpox a public health emergency of continental security (PHECS) in Africa, acting under its mandate to address significant public health threats. This was reinforced when under the International Health Regulations (2005), the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), due to the spread of the Mpox virus. Rising infection numbers are continuing to be recorded in Africa, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On the 6th of September 2024 an important step was taken to strengthen the response to the ongoing Mpox outbreak, with Africa CDC and the WHO jointly launching a continental response plan. This initiative aims to support countries in their efforts to effectively and swiftly contain the virus by reinforcing expertise, strengthening surveillance, mobilizing resources and capacities. Additionally, through collaborative efforts, an emergency tender has been issued to procure Mpox vaccines, ensuring timely and coordinated access. First batches of vaccines have been delivered.
This high-level panel discussion will discuss the regional and global health responses to Mpox, including vaccination efforts. It will explore how well international collaboration is responding to controlling the spread.
